Review of Ozark Dogs by Eli Cranor

Ozark Dogs by Eli Cranor is a compelling and gritty Southern noir novel that delves deep into themes of family, revenge, and the harsh realities of rural life. Set in a small town in Arkansas, the story revolves around Jeremiah Fitzjurls, a Vietnam veteran, and his granddaughter Jo. The novel is a dark and intense exploration of inherited hate, justice, and the complexities of human nature.

Jeremiah Fitzjurls, a Vietnam veteran with a Bronze Star, has spent 18 years sober, driven by his love for his granddaughter Jo, whom he raised after the death of his wife, Hattie. Jeremiah lives in a fortified junkyard, surrounded by a pack of vicious dogs, and has taught Jo survival skills, including how to handle firearms. As Jo nears high school graduation, she begins to seek independence, which brings her into conflict with her overprotective grandfather.

The story takes a dark turn when Jo's boyfriend, Colt Dillard, reports her missing after a homecoming game. Jeremiah suspects the involvement of the Ledford family, known for their criminal activities. The narrative unfolds through multiple third-person points of view, revealing a web of secrets, betrayals, and a scheme involving human trafficking orchestrated by Evail Rudnick, a local criminal.

Cranor masterfully captures the essence of "grit-lit" or "hillbilly noir," blending the beauty of nature with the brutality of human actions. The novel is unflinching in its portrayal of violence, addiction, and the struggle for survival in a harsh environment. The characters are deeply flawed, making a series of bad choices that lead to a savage but satisfying conclusion.

The novel's strength lies in its ability to navigate the gray areas of morality, showing the complexities of rural, small-town living. Cranor's writing is propulsive and addictive, making Ozark Dogs a book that can be devoured in one sitting. The tension is palpable throughout, and the multiple perspectives add depth to the story, gradually revealing the tragic history of Jeremiah's family.

Ozark Dogs is a relentless and gripping novel that showcases Eli Cranor's talent for storytelling within the Southern noir genre. It is a tale of blood, guilt, and the enduring bonds of family, set against the backdrop of a small town rife with secrets and violence. For readers who appreciate dark, character-driven narratives with a strong sense of place, Ozark Dogs is a must-read.
